Denies liability of the Colony for Provincial loans, and altered the bill accordingly, by majority of eight to six, Conference demanded. Major Richardson declared if resolusion is insisted upon it will upset the whole financial policy of the Government. Matters look serious if an arrangement is not come to at conference. Oct. s.— Couference held — no agreement. Managers for House of Representatives were Eitzherbert, Yogel, Moorehouse. On the part of Council — Johnston, Menzies, and Man tell. Question to be considered in both Houses to-day. Crisis serious — neither party appears willing to give way. Three courses action rumored — viz., Government resign, or ask for dissolution and appeal to the country ; or House to be prorogued, at once, and commence a new session in a week's time, a call of the House being made. The Bill passed the lower House by 37 to 12, to the utter surprise of every one. Upper House by 8 to 6, and introduced amendments having the effect just described, viz., putting bondholders at the mercy of terms fixed by Government on . pain seeing themselves deprived of security. Menzies led the opposition. The House indignantly resented the amendment. A conference met. Each House adhered to determination. Government moved adjournment on Tuesday and have sent for Harris, Strode, and other members. Upper House on Saturday showed signs of giving way. Expected on Monday, before other members arrive, will concede point altogether. The business of session will then' be ended on Tuesday and Assembly prorogued on "Wednesday. Dunedin, Monday. — Tararua detained for Strode and Harris, who left yester--day. "Wellington, Monday, 5 p.m. Nothing relating to the dead-lock took place in the Council to-day. The matter stands in abeyance until the arrival of the members of Council telegraphed for by the Government. On their arrival a • conference, with fresh managers, will probably end the. difficulty".
