STATISTICS OF NEW ZEALAND.
The Registrar- General has issued some statistical tables for the year ending 31st December, 1866, in anticipation of the annual volume which is compiled at his office. Prom these the following notes are taken : — - The total estimated European population of New Zealand at the end of December, 1866 (exclusive of the military and their families), was 204,134, of whom 125,080 were males, and 79,034 females. The population was distributed amongst the various provinces as follows : Auckland 50,101 Taranaki 4,626 Wellington 22,748 Hawke's Bay 4,820 Nelson 15,542 Marlborough 5,773 Canterbury 58,752 Otago ... ... Southland - 7,657 The Registrar- General, however, informsus, in a note, that this is only a rough approximate calculation of the population of the various provinces. The number of marriages estimated during the year was— Auckland, 543 ; Taranaki, 48 ; Wellington; 201 • Hawke's Bay, 56 ; Nelson, 108 ; Marlborough, 37 ; Canterbury, 511; Otago, 480; Southland, 51 ; Chatham Islands, 3 ; total, 2038. The following statistics, extending over a period of fourteen years, will shew the development of the trade of New Zealand. The imports during that time were : — 1853 £597,827 1854 891,201 1855 ... '..". 551,484 1860 ... ... 588,953 1861 1,370,247 1862 ... ... 2,422,734 1863 ....... 3,485,405 1864 ... ... 3,401,667 1865 ... ... 3,713,218 1866 4,520,074 The value of gold exported from the colony between the Ist April, 1857, and 31st December, 1866, is £11,842,721. The following statistics shew the number of vessels and their tonnage belonging to ports of the colony in the years mentioned respectively : — Vessels. The number of letters despatched from the colony for foreign parts was 581,726 ; newspapers, 595,803. The number of newspapers despatched to offices within the colony was 1,817,708.
