Vicissitudes ov Xjitebakt KEPtrrAiioir.— ln 1849 Petofi. was among the Magyar patriots doomed to death, and his last and bitterest outpourings were upon Francis Joseph, Emperor of Austria.' In 1867 the same Francis Joseph, King of Hungary, subscribes a hundred guilders towards a monument in honor of Petofi j and the Hungarian newspapers publish a letter from the Empress — an excellent Magyar scholar — thanking Sir John Bowring for having made the poet better fcawn to the British nation.
