THE PROVINCIAL ELECTIONS.
We have not received official intelligence of the result of the contest for the district of Oteramika, but from a private source we learn that Mr Pearson has been returned by a majority of ll — the numbers being — -Pearson, 17 ; Perkins, 6. We understand .also that Mr. Swale has been elected for Roslyn by the casting vote of the Be-, turning Officer. The "Timaru Herald" aajs:—" Three petitions to the House of Representatives are now being circulated for signature. One is from the j inhabitants of tho Timaru district, praying for I local seif -government, and has about -500 names attached to it, including all the principal men in the district. Another is from the shipowners,' merchants, and storekeepers in the town of Timara^ setting forth the great loss sustained in consequence of the Provincial G-overnment refusing to _ carry but the work recommended :byi Mr; Baliour, and asking for local government. And the third ia from farmers and carters, complaining that the Provincial, (jovernment have I neglected to bridge a single river in the district, and showing the loss they sustain in consequence. They also pray for local self-government without further delay." |
! On Friday morning last • a rumor was current !in town to the effect that a woman named Ryan, residing in Harrisyille, had died in such a i sudden and mysterious manner as to cause suspicion to be attached to her husband. It appears that on a neighbor entering the house in the course of Thursday afternoon the man Ryan was found sitting on the side of the bed supporting his wife in his arms ; he" requested the neighbor to . assist " him to lift her into bed, who, to his horror, discovered "the woman to be dead. The authorities "were of course communicated with, and Ryan was taken into: custody. —He-was-brought before the Resident' Magistrate on Friday, but -was remanded until the results .of a post, mortem examination and coroner's inquest should be known. The inquest was held at the Plough Hotel, Harrisville, on Saturday, before Dr Deck, Coroner, but was adjourned, after the examination of one witness, until Monday (this day), at 2 p.m., in order to allow of the completion of the post mortem examination. « A meeting of the Volunteer Rifle Corps was held in the Council Hall, on Thursday eToning. H. M'Culloch, Esq., was called to the chair, and read the advertisement convening the meeting. Mr Harvey then read the minutes of a meeting held in July last, when, it was resolved to form a Rifle Corps ; also, a letter from the G-eneral Government accepting the offer of the services of the Invercargill Volunteer Rifle Corps. Upwards of 40 gentlemen were then sworn in and enrolled. Officers were afterwards ballotted for, with the following result :— Mr James Harvey, Captain ; Mr F. H. Geisow, Lieutenant ; Mr F. W. Wade, Ensign ; Dr Grigor, Surgeon j Messrs Scandrett, L. Moeller and Wilkinson as sergeants (color, senior and second, respectively). Messrs J. Dalgliesh, Jas. Blacklock, R. W. Wade, Wm. Granger, W. Wilkinson, and A. Cross, were appointed to form a Committee to arrange for the uniform of the corps. Messrs Jas. Blacklock, Dunlop, and R. W. Wade were appointed to act on a Bub^Qommittee_for the formation of a cadet corps> and Messrs Erskine, McKellar, Wishart, and Smith for the formation of a band. Mr J. J. Ham was appointed Secretary, andJ. Dalgleish, Treasurer. Mr Geisow's Auction Room, Taystreet, was fixed upon the place of meeting for drill — to commence on Monday at 8 p.m, The proceedings did not terminate until a late hour. In noticing the departne of the ship Parisian, of Port Chalmers, from the inlet in British Columbia at which she received her cargo, the •' Columbian " says : — " The ship Parisian; Captain Ross, now loading at Messrs Moody and Co.'s mills, Burrard Inlet, will probably sail for Dunedin, New Zealand, on Saturday. Her cargo -will consist of 410,000 feet lumber, 30,000 shingles, 19, spars— rfour of which are 130' feet in length, 25 barrels of salmon and cranberries, and a quantity of fish oils. The value of. the cargo -will.be about 7600 dollars. Mr Thomson, of the firm of Thomson Bros., merchants of Dunedin, and owners of the ship and cargo, is here; and so well pleased is he with the lumber, &c, that he has made arrangements for keeping the ship in the trade. Mr Thomson takes with him salmon and other kinds of our fish in various forms, as samples ; and i} is highly probable that the cargo now about to leave our shores may be the means of creating a demand for those articles in the great markets of Australasia, which will result in a large trade with that important portion of the British possessions." The "Daily Times" contains the following items of intelligence by the arrival of the above vessel. That journal says : — By the arrival of the ship Parisian, we are in receipt of files of papers from Victoria, in Vancouver's Island ; from New Westminster, in Columbia ; from Port Tdwnsend and Olympia, in Washington Territory: and from Portland, in Oregonr- The items of United States Jiews which they contain have already been received, and- the-local intelligence is ; chiefly of a political character, and of very alight interest to readers in New Zealand. From the. Cariboo diggings," there was, up to the date of; the latest paper, 22nd May, no particularly good news, but a considerable quantity of gold was being brought down the country, and about 300 diggers had, previous to the l9t of May, proceeded to the mines. Exciting accounts appear in, some of the papers of an affray which had taken place at Port Townsend, Washington Territory, between Mr J. W. Tripp, of that place, and three sailors, which resulted in the death of two of the sailors and probable fatal Injury to the third. It appears that Tripp, who is a lawyer, had done some professional services for the sailors out of which sprang dissatisfaction, culminating in an assault upon the lawyer. When assaulted he levelled his gun, shot two of the men dead, and clubbed the third to the ground. His wife and brother-in-law were present during the affray, and the latter, with Tripp, had been arrested and committed for trial. With the approach of winter, destitution has again made its appearance in the Taranaki Province. Twenty-three men, fourteen of whom are married, and have in the aggregate forty-one children, have cent in a message to the Provincial Council, stating that they are out of employment, and have no means of keeping themselves and their families from starvation. ■ A most disastrous : fire broke out recently in Nelson, when upwards of £12,000 worth of property was destroyed. The premises burnt belonged to, Messrs Askew, Hornbyy WiUriej Davis, and Black. The insurance companies lose about £8,000. We*. learn from the Otago papers that the Carandini opera troupe are engaged at the Prinoess Theatre, and that the performances have been most auooeaaful.
