Gentlemen, — I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your requisition that I will allow myself to be nominated for the representation of the Waihopai district. I have on various occasions openly stated my opinions on many important political subjects. These views are well known, and remain unchanged. With reference to the point of chief interest at the present time, I may state that I am strongly in favor of the immediate and energetic prosecution, under proper supervision, of the proposed railway works, on the terms offered by the General Government, and I will support no candidate for the Superintendency who does not distinctly pledge himself to this course. I therefore willingly place myself iv your hands, and request tiiat you will meet me at the Theatre Royal to-morrow (Thursday) evening, at half-past seven, that I may explain my views more fully.
