A REPLY.

(TO THE EDITOII OF THE SOUTHLAND TIMES. .Sir, — Happeuiug to be ia Invercargiil 011 Saturday, i saw a iecter in your contemporary, signed .Andrew Tosnack, evidently intended as an answer to one from me, published in your journal. It is not my intention to bandy words with Mr Toshack, I have no in-feeiing towards him, nay more, as an individual I respect i him, but as a politician, to my mind be is a failure. Fortunately for the cause of progress he has been rejected by the electors, uud I aiii suusaoa. » uci'e is, oowcver, u.aGier contained ill vis letter u.iU iliUd'b liut £v Uilv.".t.a.v.'li^uvi. \ViLU a ijLiiu. rucKicb^iit-oa jiiucu to ue con- , deinned, he has attempted to father my i letter on a gentleman whom he pleases ; to designate " the Colonel," aud ail he says is levelled at this imaginary antago- i nist. As it is generally known who " tlie Colonel " is meant for ; in justice to that i

gentleman I beg to inform Mr Toshack he never made a greater mistake in his life, although all his public actions have been mistakes. The so-called " Colonel " did not write, see, or know anything more of the letter in question than Mr Toshacfc himself. He never could have seen, or heard of it until it appeared in your journal. You, Sir, can bear me 4 out in this assertion. I would kindly suggest to Mr Toshack that when he again rushes into print he will " sleep over it " before he attempts to fix upon an individual the authorship of any letter that may appear in a public journal, or he may find to his cost that by frantically jumping at conclusions he may knock his head against a stone wall, and for ever extinguish the penetrating intellectual fire he believes he possesses. Tour's, &c. Mablb. August 10th, 1867. [We can to the fullest extent endorse the statement of. our correspondent as to the authorship of the letter. — Ed. S. T.]
