Bakrels without States. — Barrels are now constructed in America (reports the Scientific Revieto) very ingeniously, without being formed of staves. Tfcin strips of white oak are wrapped spirally round a mould of any required size, and representing the interior of the barrel, each layer crossing the preceding diagonally, and all of them being firmly attached to each other with a suitable glue or cement. Fourteen layers are found to give very great strength. The heads are forced in the sama way. Barrels may thus be made with great economy and speed ; they are light and are not liable to leakage. They are used especially for coal oil.

When the doctrine of liomcepathy was first introduced into England, there were to be obtained no preparations of cocoa either attractive to the taste oi- acceptable to the stomach ; the nut was either supplied in the crude state or so unskilfully manufactured as to obtain little notice. J KPPiS, of London, homonpathic chemist, was indued, in the year 1839, to turn his attention to this subject, and at length succeeded, with the a<si.<fcauc3 of elaborate machinery, in being the first tc introduce an article pure in its composition, and so refined by the perfect tnturation it receives in the process it passes through, as to be most acceptable to th^ delicate stomach. Advertisement. — Holloway's Ointment and Pilis have, over and over again, proved the best friends to persons afflicted with ulcerations, bad legs, sores, abscesses, fistulas, and other painful and complicated complaints. Printed and very plain directions for the application of the Ointment and Pills are wrapped round each pot or box. Holloway's purifying Pills should be taken throughout the progress ot the cure, to maintain the blood in a state of perfect purity, and to prevent the health of the whole body being jeopardised by the local ailment. Bad legs are thus readily cured, without confining the patiens to bed, or withdrawing from him the nutritious diet and generous support so imperatively demanded when weakening diseases attack the systems of either young or old,
