NOMINATION OF CANDID ATES.
Mr L. Lo> t gttet was proposed by Mr Locktee, " as a fit and proper person to represent them in the Provincial Council." He said, as an old and respected settler, lie considered Mr Longuet the only really eligible candidate — par-, ticularly as he was the only local man who possessed both property and influence in the place. Therefore, in supporting him, they* forwarded their own interests, as any matter apart from it must be to his own disadvantage. (Cheers.) Mr Pabsost seconded— saying he endorsed all Mr Lockyer had said. Mr Waddell then proposed Mr Mitchell as a fit and proper person to represent the Campbelltown district. Mr T. Gk Tantojt seconded the nomination. Mr Lo^gttet was then called upon to address the electors, after which Mr James Waddell asked Mr Longuet if he would take office with the late Blacklock Executive? Mr LojfftUET — I would, with any parties favorable to the Railways,
Mr Waddell — Would you take office with the late Blacklock Executive, supposing they pursued the same policy as hitherto ? Mr Lokguet — Certainly, with any Ministry, if they would support Bailways. Mr "Waddell — Have you sufficient confidence in the late Executive, supposing they are again returned, to support them in carrying out the railways. Mr Longuet — No ; not without General Government supervision. Mr Mitchell said, after hearing Mr Longuet replies to questions put, he was satisfied, and therefore would retire in favor of Mr Longuet. All he wanted was truly righ^ -minded people, and 20s in the pound for Southland. Mr Longttet then returned thanks. A vote of thanks to S. Nichol, Esq., Eeturning Officer, terminated the proceedings.
