OEHHNAL POETEY. THE HEART. Though the shape of the heart makes it easy to turn, Can the cause of its motion depend on its form ? There must be some power within or without To set in motion, and move it about. Now life is the power that sets it in motion ; Still love has a power to regulate action, love acts as a balance on life's silver thread, That extends for uniting the heart with the head. Love acts, too, with reason on Ufe's sUver thread ; They both act together, because they are wed ; StiU love is a passion, its effects on the mind Is a test of our fancy, with reason combined. When our judgment gets cloudy, our light can't be clear, I So reason will falter and envy appear, AU envy, Uke venom, never acts weU ; lt poisons affections and changes the wiU If envy succeeds to put love from her throne, Then the best of our actions are selfish and wrong ; Our love is so tender, and the heart is too smaU, For both love and envy together to dwell. Could the dove fight a serpent coiled up in her nest, We might guess who would conquer in such a contest ; When true love is poisoned, I think it's a case ; There is no balm in nature — it's only in grace.
