always been opposed to canvassing, having seen its effects at-home. -The various attempts made to gain the ballot prove the existence of the evil it seeks to cure. An intelligent constituency should know the opinions of the various candidates before their choice is made. The session before last considerable time was spent in discussing whether we should be reunited to Otago, or wiped put with the sponge of oblivion. The Provincial system was admirably suited for us for years ,to come if we had used without abusing it. We are in difficulties, but our assets are still far greater than our- liabilities. In answer to Capt. Thomson, Mr M'Cltjbe said that he was not going in for a government billet, but that he would not pledge himself not to accept any political position which was open to every member of the Council ; that he had never been a keen supporter of Dr Menzies, though at the last general elec- \ tions he had preferred him to some ] others. In answer to Mr Baird, Mr M'Cltjbe said that the proper source from which to derive funds for education was tbe general revenue of the country, and not local taxation. In answer to Mr Russell, Mr M'Cltjbe said that he did not see any great objection to Mr Taylor as Superintendent ; he would not hesitate for one moment in voting for him in preference to Dr Menzies. Capt. Thomson said that although he was one of Mr Armstrong's supporters, he would move a vote of thanks to Mr M'Clure for his explanations. Carried j unanimously. j* i ' . *• Requisitions MR.
