RIVERTON.
The second annual Ploughing Match of the Aparirna district took place on Eriday, July 19th, on the ground of Mr John Polls, Gummies Bush. Unfortuna? tely the weather proved very unfavorable which prevented many from being unable to attend in consequence qf Jacob's River being too high for them to cross. The following gentlemen acted, as judges: — B. Hamilton, Esq., (Morton Mains), Mr Hamilton, (Wallacetown), and Mr J. P. Young, Riverton ; the last named gentleman officiated in the place of Mr J. Macintosh, Otautau, who having met with an accident could not attend. Among the numerous visitors on the ground were the following gentlemen : — Messrs Christopher, Basstian, E. Eielder, Will Cameron, D. M. Cameron, E. Manson, J. M'Norton, A. M'Clymont, C. G. Whitley, G. Stevens, A. Lyons, W. Cochran, J. Surrnan, J. E. Mills, M. Instone, A. M. Cameron, P. Grant, J. Reid, J. Bell, Scully, Densham, T. Austin, J. L. M'Donald, H. Howey, Capta. Howell and Stevens. The ploughs started at 9 o'clock. The following is the list of the successful competitors .* — SENIOR CLASS. Ist Prize, .£6 — John Campbell, Jacob's River. 2nd Prize, ,£5 — James Miller, Jacob's River. 3rd Prize, £4— J. Clark, ploughman to Mr Sutton. 4th Prize, * £3 — James Cummingß, Gummie's Bush. sth Prize, £2— J. Eraser, Waianiwa. 6th Prize, £I— David Younger, Groper's Bush. JTJNIOB CLASS. Ist Prize, .£2— John Murdock, ploughman to Mr M'Clymont, Mains, (only competitor.) EXTRA PRIZES. For Best Break — J. Fraser, Waianiwa. Eor Best Einish — J. Campbell, Jacob's Eiver. The above prizes consisted of a pair of baekbands, awarded to each by Mr Gellatly, Invercargill. A prize of £1 was awarded to J. Clark, ploughman to Mr Sutton, for the best team and harness. A prize of £1 awarded to W. Johnston, Groper's Bush, for best groomed horses. A prize of a pair of leggings was awarded by Mr Murchie, Riverton, to the first off the ground. A sumptuous repast was provided at Messrs Bath and Hopcroft's, to which 72 gentlemen sat down. The viands were all that could be wished for, and the arrangements did great credit to the caterers. The chair was taken by M. Instone, Esq., the president— Mr J. L. M'Donald occupying the vice. After the usual loyal and many other toasts had been drunk and the company enlivened with some songs, the gentlemen adjourned to the ball room, where they were joined by the ladies, and dancing was kept up until an early hour the next morning. The above match has proved one of the most successful of the season in this province, and the Committee of Management deserve great credit for the able way in which all the arrangements were carried out.
