The Melbourne correspondent of tihe Ballarat Star states :— r" The manufacture of colonial boots has so rapidly increased that there are not liaads enough in the trade to do the work. ; I am' informed that a thousand journeymen could find employment in Melbourne alone, besides those already here. Sydney has been tried, but there are no workmen to be had there, as they are fully -employed, and as the work is lighter, though the wages are a litte lower, the men earn as much there' as-here. Four boot and shoe factories : are reported to be. almost,- if not quite ridle, for want of . . men, and the machinery employed in boot making.'is comparatively useless \for want of workmen to use it and, supplements. . In the- "face of thesefacts it seems madness in., the artizan class. to oppose immigration.
