Some time since the local Custom House .authorities thought fit to refuse to the Press the publication of the entries and shipping returns, on the ground that ;recent advice received from the Colonial Secretary prohibited such information being given. All remonstrance on our part as to the interpretation to be placed upon .the order was unavailing: the Collector of Customs adhered to the strict letter of the law. The consequence was, that during the past week, the mercantile community and general public were debarred from learning, through the columns of the. Press, most necessary and useful information.- The course pursued by the officials caused a telegram to be sent to the Colonial Secretary/ at Wellington, who at once Teplied, sending instructions to the Collector of Customs to afford every facility to the Press in obtaining the information required. Our shipping and commercial columns- this morning consequently contains their usual features of interest. . , .
