HOKITIKA.

By the arrival of the Lord Ashley we are placed in possession of late West Coast papers. The " Times " ol 22nd inst., under the heading of Commercial Intelligence, has the following — No material change has taken place in the import market since our report of 15th inst. Markets having been quiet, no transactions of any magnitude having come under our notice. A marked paucity of imports from intercolonial ports has been a feature of the week. No additions of any importance having been made to stocks, market values of leading commodities have not consequently been put to the test. Trade inland and coastwise has not been so brisk as anticipated, having receired a temporary check by the heavy rainfalls j this can only be pro tern., as the cause will give an impetus to business, for some time looked forward to. There has been more enquiry for spirits for local trade ; brandies are firmer; case has been sold at an advance. Wines are without change, meeting with little inquiry. Ale (new brew) is wanted, and would realise well j there has been more enquiry for porter in glass, of good brands. Flour remains comparatively unaltered ; the improvement in the Adelaide market has not yet been responded to here. Oats have been enquired for early in the week at an advance. Subsequent arrivals checked further improvement — a parcel ex Canterbury realising, alongside, 4s ; for Taieri 4s 6d, may be taken as the value. In provisions scarce anything has been done, prices remaining as last quoted. The auction marts have not done much business, no disposition having been shown by the trade to purchase extensively. Mr.G. W. Binney reports sale of cargo ex Canterbury — Price's candles, Is 3_-d j butter, Is 6_-d ; oats, 4s ; Henhes.y's case brandy, 30s 6d ; 1 dried apples, Hid j maizena, 8d ; hair brooms, 27s per dozen.
