"William Tanner was charged with re- . sisting and assaulting a constable when - ih execution of his duty, on the 21st inst, ScrgeantShuryßtated:-***-Betweenthehours of one and two on Sunday afternoon last, I was on duty in Havelock-street, and ; saw the prisoner and two other men - "trying to gain admittance to the Marine Hotel, which was closed. Perceiving that they were the worse for drink, I advised them to go home quietly, upon which the prisoner-called me a B— — -— . y trap, and*--? used other ins*olting language. I immediately arrested him, when he commenced to scuffle with me and pull me about, and I had to call upon/ Mr/Hancock to assist me in conveying him to the lock-up. Thet. - Bench, in summing up, stated that such • conduct as was displayed on the part of the prisoner could not be tolerated. -The police must be protected when in execu*tion of their duty, which at all times was, . • a very arduous one j and seeing by the f Police Gazette that this was not the first time the .prisoner had committed a Bimiliar offence, he should in this case inflict the penalty of £10, or in., default 6 weeks' imprisonment, cautioning him that the next offence would be visited with a heavier penalty, and longer term of imprisonment. The fine not being paid, the prisoner was removed to the lock-up» for conveyance the next morning to gaolr
