' Scarcely anything of importance^>.has occurred under this heading. 4DrKm&%v, Auditor-General of New Zealand^i^cently paid this province a visit, in consequence ,-of representations from the Provincial Government to the General Government, on the desirability of completing with iron rails the Northern line to Winton. It is understood also that Mr Stafford's Govemmerifrirfavbrable to the construction of a light line, of railway to the Mataura. This is in furtherance of the scheme for a grand trunk line of railway throughout the Middle Island. The Pro! Yincial -Government,— by ihe judicious ! measures ihey appear to- have recently .taken, as well as their desire to meet the wishes of the- publi^r-uncontrolled- by party bickeringor preju&ce* have evinced a power of exertion not hitherto displayed. It is to be hoped that the local authorities will persistently endeavor -to | expedite. matters, in order to allow of the j perfecting of the projects now in contemplation. ■
