RIVERTON.

(FBOM OTTB OWN CORBESPOItDENT.) On Saturday evening, March 30th, an accident occurred on the river which nearly resulted in loss of life. It appearß that as CanapbeU and Roderick, boatmen, were conveying a mannamed O'Brien with his two sons from the Jetty to the " Jane" (which was lying off Dallis's point, on the south side, and was ready to sail to Orepuki), O'Brien, in attempting to get irom one boat to the other, fell into the deepest part of the water ; through his being slightly inebriated, lost all control over himself, and would have sunk had it not been for the assistance of Roderick, who immediately jumped in, and with the help of Campbell (to whom the "Jane" belongs), succeeded in rescuing the nearly drowning man from a watery grave. Had he lost his, life, he would' have left a widow and, children to .mourn his loss, "We understand that Roderick, has saved, several lives since he has been plying to and from this port, Great improvements have lately taken place in our town in buildings. One promiment feature which strikes the eye of a visitor on arriving heire is the fine new store of 'Whittinghain Brothers, opposite the Custom houses Workmen have been for a long time en« . gaged in making great alterations in the old ,Btore, and adding a new. one, which, for style of Architecture and size, •is equal to a»y i» the. lately been opened as a drapery and clothing establishment, and is well stocked with all the newest and choicest fabrics that manufacturers can produce. Any " old identity" who knew the store in its old days, would have a difficult job to recognise it now, with its fine plate glass windows and elegant frontage. Such improvements speak well for our township, proving that we are progressing, and that business is flourishing. It is to be hoped that it will still continue to do so.
