All the passengers are safe. 4.12 p.m. Wellington 2nd. — In addition lo the patent slip dispute, Kennard Brothers threaten Provincial Government with an action to recover -87000, alleged misdiscription of sea bottom in wharf extension just been completed. Tne Government has sent a retaining fee to the At-; torney- General for both suits. The following telegrams appeared in the Otago papers yesterday, from their Northern correspondents, and were forwarded from Dnnedin to Invercargill the same day -~ Wellington, 2nd April. General Chute has returned to Auckland. The Montmorency, Captain Eayner, from London, arrived at Napier on Sunday, 24th ult., and "was totally destroyed by fire on the following Wednesday night. The passengers and luggage had all been landed, but bulk had not been broken in cargo. The fire occurred about midnight, and in one hour from the time it was discovered the crew had to take to the boats. At 4 a.m. all the masts had gone, and the ship was soon after completely gutted. She smouldered all day on Thursday, and on Friday she was unshackled from her moorings and stranded. The principal shipments are insured, but the officers and crew have lost almost everything. Mr M'Lean, Native Minister, Mr Eichmond, and others are attending large native gatherings at Wairoa, for the purpose of adjusting land and other questions arising out of the war. At a public meeting at Auckland Mr Williamson's candidature for the Superintendency was postponed for a week, The Arawas have taken a pah at Eotorua, with slight loss on both sides ; Major M*Donnell has gone there with reinforcements — 250 Arawas and 150 militia. The Arawas captured Peter Grant, deserter ; he received 50 lashes, and was branded. The Southern Cross says the Hau-haus have entire charge of Tauranga, outside the township, and may be seen leisurely walking about. Two ships leave with troops for London this week. Wellington, 3rd April. The wreck of the Montmorency was sold at Napier for £350. Eeports have arrived from Tauranga that Major M-Donnell had attacked and captured Hau-hau pah at Eotorua, with rpuch slaughter— eight bodies picked up, Not a soratoh inflicted on the Major's force."
