ERRORS OF THE PRESS. BY JAMBS BBTTNTOtf. I wrote a poem to my Jane, Which to the papers went ; 'Tis printed, but I had no proof, And thus it forth is sent. A plague upon that editox*, To get me in this mess ; A laughing-stock to make me, through These errors of the press. In "fairy," h is put for// Enough to make one storm ; The come has b instead of c, " Com& here thou Aairy form !" Then "zephyr," too, is "heifer" made, All common sense defying ; Hear this, " I mark thy graceful shape, Like to the heifer flying." '• My poor, cot is a grot of green, Come Bhare, sweet maid," what's here ? "My poor cot" they have render'd^orfc hot, And " grot" is " pot !"— Oh dear ! Sublime turn'd to ridiculous ! Fort runs thus, by these means — " Oh ! come and share my pork hot,". And "in a pot of greens .'" Sh, in "relic," knocks out C, And thus they me embellish — " I send thee, sweet, a lock of hair, Oh, keep it as a relish 1" « What's this in " pickle ?"— « P" for " F !" That printer should be hung ! Then "pork" for"talk" — "Jane, bythypor&, Thou hast a pielcle tongue" From golden" they have taken " g," (I'm quite out of her books !) And thus it reads, " Dear Jane, oil have Long mark'd thy olden looks!" From " rose" they take "r" and put " n," (My imag'ry o'erthrown !) K Thy peerless beauty seemeth like A nose that is just blown !" "In proper lines, if I'd the power, I"d hare thee" — this is wrong ! In " Bung" is " h" instead of " s," I'd have thee, dear Jane, hung !" In "hope" and " altar," sad mistakes, " My fond heart would not falter, To place around thee all my rope, An lead thee^to the halter. 1 "
