March 8, 2.25 p.m. Provincial Council elections— Lakes, — Haughton without opposition— Port Chalmers,— Taylcr, 62 ; Malcolm, 55— Waihola,— Mollison— Taeiri, —Shand, Robertson, A. J. Burns, Donald Reid. There are 21 candidates for seven seats for Dunedin. Whittaker has resigned the superintendency of Auckland. Curtis and Barnicoat are candidates for the superintendency of Nelson, the show of hands was in favor of the former. Dr Hector writes to Wellington from West Port, had dangerous exploration and nearly starved for three weeks. Had dislocated his shoulder. Tatjkajtga.— No further fighting. The Arawas closely following the Hau-Haus. Skirmishes expected. Two dead Hau-Haus have been discovered in the bush. None of the Europeans who wr-re wounded have died, but are all getting on well. Gordon and Jeif, who were killed in the late engagements, *were buried and had large funerals. The Timaru sailed from Timaru for London on Sunday last. Had 3,004 bales of wool. The Governor was at Tuapeka last evening. Captain Hope is expected here next Monday. The Brisk is likely to sail the following Saturday or Monday.
