THE HOSPITAL.
The Hospital Management Committee (provisional) appointed at the public meeting held on the 20th inst., has taken up in right earnest the work placed in its hands. Its second meeting took place last evening in the Committee Room, Government Buildings. Mr J. J. Ham the Secretary, after the confirmation of the minutes of preceding meeting, stated he had in compliance with instructions then received communicated with His Honor the Superintendent, and that he had received the following reply : — Superintendent's Office, Southland, 25th Feb., 1867. ' - Sib,— l have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 22nd inst., enclosing copies of resolutions passed at a meeting of the Hospital Committee on the 22nd inst., and in reply to inform you that when a committee shall have been formed in terms of the Hospitals Ordinance, 1863," the Government will pay to the Treasurer appointed by such Committee^ any • sum or sums voted or to be voted by the Provincial Council as contribution to the Hospital, and will also give the entire control of the institution to such Committee. Reference is made to probable arrangements between the Government and such Committee as to victualling the lunatic patients, but I would call the attention of the sub-committee to the circumstance that the clothes-washing of these unfortunate people is at present done in the Hospital, and that occasionally the warder of lunatics has to call for assistance from the other department when any of those under his charge become unmanageable. The female lunatic would, I imagine, have again to be placed under the charge of the matron to the Gaol. However, all these are matters of detail which could, I think, be arranged with any Committee to be appointed. I have the honor to be, Shy Your obedient servant, Jno. P. Tayloe, Superintendent. Jabez Ham, Esq., Secretary of Hospital Committee. Mr Lttmsden moved — " That the letter received from the Government in reply to the resolution having reference to the collecting of subscribers names and providing for the future management of the Hospital is entirely satisfactory an d this ; committee resolve now to proceed to make arrangements
for the procuring of subscribers namea." , Carried. It was further moved by the same — " That the secretary be requested to deliver subscription lists to each of the ' banks, mercantile and other places of business in town, and also that a circular be printed and distributed throughout country districts inviting subscribers to forward their names to the secretary." Mr Soandeett then moved— " That in view of the Hospital being placed under the management of a public committee, the secretary be requested to obtain from the authorities of similar institutions in other places, a copy of their rules of management." After a vote of thanks to the chairman (Mr Kingsland) the meeting was adjourned to the 7th proximo.
