GREENLAW DEAN—A REMINISCENCE.

By John G. Smith. [Greenlau Dean is a beautiful valley in the immediate neighborhood of Greenlaw in Berwickshire, through which the Adder winds its devious way to the silvery Tweed.] Yarrow's braes are fair and bonny* Birken Shaws and " dowie dens," Heathy hills unmatched by any, Glassy lakes and flow'ry glens. Scotias borders wander through, Mark each soul-enchanting scene. None from nature's hand can borrow Kajrer charms than Greenlaw Dean. Limpid streamlets'blithely leaping, Shimmering in the golden ray, Then beneath the hazels sleeping, like an infant tired of play. See, the meeting of the waters, By the flower-besp»ngled green, Adder, first of music's daughters, Deftly trips thro'Greenlaw Dean^ Here afar from earth's turmoiling, Artless maids and shepherd swains, 'Neath the silvery moonbeams, smiling, Sang their loves in simple strains. Here in wild and wayward measure, Fairies danced upon the green, Here they left their elvish treasure, * Tribute to seewt Greenlaw Dean. O, the bliss of being lonely, O the charms of solitude, O, to live with nature only, Ever beatious, ever good, Silence, with its airy voices, Peace and love enwrap the scene, Even the sin-seared soul rejoices, 'Mid the wilds of Greenlaw Dean. What are courts with all their splendour ? Phantoms vain and idle show. What are lofty state and grandeur ? Can they peace of mind bestow f Give me but one glimpse of nature Clothed in robe of summer green, Pointing to her great Creator, Like thy beauties; —Greenlaw Dean.
