MELBOURNE.
The "Argus" of 13th Feb. reports :—
In the import markets to-day, pending the arrival of the mail steamer, no animation whatever existed ; and though, in candles especially, a good deal of excitement prevailed, yet as stocks of this article are very limited, there was very little room for business. At auction, some 1,500 boxes, slightly damaged, were disposed of at Is 4£d per lb., and a parcel of 1,000 boxes of Belmont, in one line, were placed at Is 4d, which, later in the day, were all resold at Is sd. An offer of Is s£d was refused for a parcel" of 300 boxes. We hear of the bill of lading for a shipment of 200 boxes, to arrive per Wellesley, having been sold at Is 3d net, with all risks, including duty. The Neva Company have raised the price of their brand to Is sd, but even at that rate they refuse to deliver more than the most limited trade parcels* Sales privately of brewing crystal sugars are reported at £35. At auction some 2,500 bags of Java brought from £35 15s to £37 for grey crystals, and £31 10s for dark brown crystals. Cornsacks have been much inquired for ; holders of Dundees ask 14s, and offers of 13s 9d have been refused. Some twenty bales of Calcuttas were cleared off at 13s 6d. There are inquiries for salt, and we hear of about a couple of hundred tons having been quitted at close on £4 10s. About a hundred tons in inferior condition were placed at £3 5s as the parcel stood. Teas command a good deal of notice ; two chops, of about 420 chests, ex Peru, changed hands at Is lOJd for better than good medium congous. A parcei of 250 cases of Hennessy's brandy, and also a shipment of 500 cases and thirty quarter-casks of Otard's pale brandy, were disposed of on private terms. The market for breadstuff's wears a firm aspect ; about fifty tons of best Adelaide town brands were quitted for export at £12 15s to £13, in bond, and free of wharfage rates ; while Harf s, in hundred-pound bags, expressly prepared for the New Zealand market, realised £13 10s in bond. Of wheat we hear of no sales. Maize continues dull at 4s 6d. Java rice found buyers by auction at £23 17s 6d to £24.
