By the arrival of the Omeo we aTe placed in possession .of Melbourne files to the 2nd inst. " The Argus of that date contains the following commercial article : — In the import markets, business maintains rather an inanimate appearance, the demand for merchandise generally having been somewhat circumscribed to-day. In the market for breadstuff's there is little Adelaide flour offering, and prices are inclined to harden. Best town brands, which are wanted for shipment, would realise £12 15s to £13 ; for country brands we quote £12. Trade sales of sound Chilian wheat are mentioned at 4s 9d., and at auction 4s 3d to 4s 4Jd was realised for a parcel of faulty. Maize is a shade easier, and difficult to quit at 4s 3d to 4s 4d. Candles meet with a fair inquiry, and parcels are readily disposed of at Is Id., numerous sales of Belmonts and other descriptions having been effected at our quotation. The public sale of sugar was well attended, but the bidding was somewhat, slow : nearly 6,000 bags oi the 7,000 offered, however, were disposed of at prices which show a slight advance. Rations were quitted at 24s to 24s 3d for low. to 28b 6d for best sorts, 34s 3d for good to 35s 6d for fine counters, 34s 3d for good to 35s 6d for fine counters, 34s 6d to 37s for good to finest yellow crystals, and 38s 6d for middling to 39s 9d for fine white crystals. Inquiries for but* er are still experienced; 12d is now generally asked for good Cork, and we hear of about 150 firkins having been placed at close on this figure. An invoice of American chairs found a purchaser at twenty per cent advance. Cornsacks have been in some request j and holders having eased somewhat in their demands, sales to the extent of about eighty bales of Dunde.es have been made at 13s 3d., and a shade under. Halves sardines have been quitted at 8s 6d, and quarters at 5s 6d. Sales of American oysters have been effected at 9s 6d. Oilmen's stores are asked for, and invoices of assortments have been sold at very fall rates. A shipment of about seven tons of polar oil has been cleared off, to land, at up to £54. In liquids, we rote sales of Barclay's, Byass's, and Machen's stout, at prices rising irom 8s 6d to 9s 3d. Trade parcels of Martell's pale brandy, in quarters, have been disposed of at 6s 9d. Hennessy's case brandy continues to meet with a fair amount of notice, at 26s for trade parcels, to a trifle under for larger quantities. By auction 180 packages of twist and terms tobacco were quitted at from 7d to Is l|d., according to quahty.
