ARRIVAL OF THE PANAMA MAIL

(From the " Daily Times,.' Jan. 28.) * Wellington, Saturdays . The " Independent " statesiJhat the re-? port of Mr Whitaker having accepted the' Attorney-Generalship is premature., Christchurch, Saturday. There have heen two public dinners in celebration of Burns' Anniversary. One, in Christchurch, was held at the Town Hall ; the other, in Lyttleton, was at the Queen Hotel. Each was largely attended. Wellington, Sunday. The Euahine, Captain Beal, with the European mails, via Panama, arrived at the Heads at 3.15 p.m. She was delayed at Panama through the late arrival of the English mail. The La Plata, with the mail, arrived at St. Thomas on the 20th of December, having been delayed by rough and foggy weather. On her outward voyage, the Euahine j left Wellington at 7 p.m. on the Bth of i November. On the 11th, passed a wreck, j supposed to be that of a brig, waterlogged, dismasted, and abandoned. Had fine weather all the way, and arrived at Panama on the 7th December, at Tls p.m. The Prince Alfred arrived at Panama on the 27th December. At 9 p.m., December 27th, the Euahine took on board 139 bags of the mail, and proceeded to sea at 1 a.m. on the 28th.— Mr Jas. Schrader in charge of the English, j mail.
