RIVERTON.

On Monday, December 31st., a cricket match took place at Gummy's Bush between their own eleven under the guidance of Captain Walker, and an eleven of Eiverton with Captain Mills at their head. The day turned out very wet and boisterous, notwithstanding which the Eivertonians arrived on the ground, and succeeded in coming off victorious. The score standing Gummy's Bush — 42 ; Eiverton 85.. After, the match the players adjourned to Mr Bath's Barn where they were regaled with a dinner given by the Gummy Bush Cricketers, to the eleven of Eiverton. The evening was brought to a close by dancing, which lasted till a late hour. . On Thursday, January 3rd, the return match was played between . the above clubs on the Eiverton ground, which again resulted in the Eivertonians coming off victorious. The, score standing thus : — lst innings, Crummy's Bush, 34. — Biverton 22. 2nd innings : — Crummy's Bush, 25. — Eivertou, 63. In the evening the Eiverton cricketers in their turn gave a dinner to the Crummy's Bush eleven, at the Marine Hotel. The chair was taken by C. G. Whitley, Esq., president of the E.C.C.; Captain "Walker, of Gummy's Bush, acting as vice-chair-man. The following toasts were proposed during the evening, " The Queen ;" " Army and Navy and Volunteers." Eesponded to by Captain Instone, of the E.V.E. " Gummy's Bush Eleven.' Drank with all honors. Responded to by Captain Walker, G.8.C.C., who in return proposed " Eiverton Eleven." Drank with all honors. Eesponded to by Captain Mills, E.TT.C.C. "President of Eiverton Cricket Club." Eesponded to by C. G. Whitley Esq., who next proposed the health of the Hon. Secretary E.TJ.C.C, responded to by Mr H. J. Whittington. "The Treasurer." Eesponded to by Mr W. Crisp. " The visitors from Orepuki." Eesponded to by Mr Taylor. " The Captain of E.TJ.C.C." Eesponded to by J. E. Mills Esq., The last toasts were the " Ladies " and the " Press," which met with a response from all present. Three cheers for the Scorers and Umpires and a vote of thanks to the UKairinan conciuaea a uivav juyioi unwii^ g of cricketers.. ; After the dinner a grand ball was given in the Odd-Fellows' Hall. Invitations having been sent to a large number of ladies caused a good attendance of the fair sex. Dancing commenced at 10 p.m. and was kept up until an early hour the next morning after which the company repaired to their homes having spent a most pleasant night. On Saturday, the sthinst., parade took place of the Kiverton Eifle Volunteers, under the command of Captain Instone. They certainly are a credit to Southland and with the new members lately joined promise to make an efficient company. Now that the drill-sergeant has taken, up his quarters here it is to be hoped that the members will attend drill punctually. The following evenings have' been appointed for squad drill-- Mondays and" Thursdays ; and for' Co^paiiy, Tuesakys and Saturdays, " - ,
