The Queen is at "Windsor. Her health is reported as good. Parliament is still in recess. The h on. Mr Yerd on has been made a C.B. His mission to England, asking the Imperial Government to furnish a training ship and armour-plated frigates to serve as the nucleus of a system of naval defences for the Australian colonies, has been completely successful, two war vessels— one an iron-clad, to be commanded by Captain Payne — having been granted on favorable terras. A complimentary dinner was given to Mr Verdon, at Wills's Rooms, on the 21st, by the Australian colonists resident in London. The Pope has resolved, if compelled to leave Home, to accept the invitation of the British Government and reside at Malta. . Becent heavy rains have swelled the streams from the Yorkshire, Derbyshire, and Lancashire hills, causing serious floods in several parts of the country. The entire loss of property is computed at half a million sterling. Public subscriptions are being raised for the relief of the. sufferers. Judgment was given by the Master of the Rolls in the early part of the month in the case of Colenso v. Colonial Bishops. The Judge decided that the defendants must pay the bishop's salary and defray the cost of the suit, the Bishop of Cape Town not having the power to deprive Colenso of the sea of Natal.
