Becent heavy rains have swelled the streams from the Yorkshire, Derbyshire, and Lancashire hills, causing serious floods in several parts of the country. The entire loss of property is computed at half a million sterling. Public subscriptions are being raised for the relief of the. sufferers. Judgment was given by the Master of the Rolls in the early part of the month in the case of Colenso v. Colonial Bishops. The Judge decided that the defendants must pay the bishop's salary and defray the cost of the suit, the Bishop of Cape Town not having the power to deprive Colenso of the sea of Natal.
