i It will be seen from an Advertisement in ■ another column that Mr Todd's Sale of Furniture, Surveyors Instruments, kc, previously advertised I to take place to-day, has been withdrawn. 1 The annual general meeting of the members of | the Chamber of Commerce will be held on Thnrs» i day, the 29th November. The business to be i brought forward is important, including the question of the opening of the Bluff and Invercargill | Railway. It is therefore desirable that all i members should make it a duty to attend. The following is the state of H. M. Q-aol for the week ending Tuesday, the 27th instant; — Seni tenced to penal servitude, 6 males; sentenced to hard labor, 5 males ; Debtors, 2 malpg ; Totalis males. Received during the week, 2 males ; Discharged during the week, 1 male. Increase for the week, 1 male. A meeting of the Fire Brigade was held at the : Engine House, on Monday, 26th November. i The first business transacted was the consideration of a letter from Captain Reese, who tendered his resignation, being in ill health, and from the pressure of business. The resignation was accepted with an expression of regret that circumstances had arisen to lead him to sever himself from the corps with which he had heen so long connected. Tbe question of the purchase of a Are bell was discussed $ it was stated that the Insurance Companies bad offered to supplement tbe fnnds in hands, for its purchase. Several tenders | from Melbourne were read, and it wa9 resolved that tbe Insurance Agents be authorised to accept the best article offered. Messrs Cork and Bowman reported having canvassed Dee-street for subscriptions, and received promises to tbp extent of Pl 9 ; Messrs G-rnhnm and Mnrnbv who had canvassed Tny and *Fs'r streets, stated tha* they bad collected .-£l2 TbA Spwtnrv was instructed t.f> write to Mr "Kin cal arid to nVow Hrnselt to be nominntpd to t^e offee of Captain of thp Brigade. Several parries were proposed bf new mpmbprs. nnd an evident desire to render tbe body efficient generally displayed. Tbe following is taken from tbe DagblaM Copenhagen — " Sword of honor" : — " Tt ia witb great pleasure tbat we can communicate a new proof with what tenacity of patriotic feeling, th* Danish S] e swigers clin-rs to then* common Fatherland, and tbe warm gratitude tbey feel towards everyone there who have fought for tbe preservation of the Dukedom of Sleswig, for the Danish Crown. The courageous and enduring defender, Captain Lieutenant O. C. V. Hammer, of tbe Danish Navy, bas on this day received from the Danish inhabitants of the west coast of Sleswig, a very handsome and valuable sword of honor ; its blade is of rich Damascus steel, on the one side bearing the inscription, Sir O. C. V. Hammer, 1850-64, and on the other side of the blade it baars the inscription, from grateful friends ofthe Western Ocean. Tbe hilt of the sword is of gold, and studded with precious stones, the scabbard of silver — this is a present which in an equal degree honors the receiver as well as the givers." We understand that Mr P. A. Y. Hammer, of InvercargiU, is a younger brother of the gentleman above alluded to."
