An accident has happened to the telegraph wires between Picton and Christchurch, causing "communication with stations further north than j the latter place to be suspended since Friday morning. A special meeting of the Invercargill Volunteer Fire Brigade will be held at the _enginhouse, Tay-street, on Monday (*his evening), at 8 o'clock. The business is important. From an advertisement in another column it will be seen that the time appointed for receiving and paying deposits at the Savings' Bank is — Mondays, from 12 to 2 o'clock ; and for receiving deposits — Fridays, from 5 to 8 o'clock, at the office, Esk-street. We understand that a telegram has been received from the Secretary of the General Post Office, with reference to the table of rates of postage recently issued, in which it is stated that " the newspaper rate will not be enforced, til* after the issue of an order in Council for that purpose." From this it would appear that the General Government is divided on this question. A meeting of the Southland Waste Land B.oard was held on Friday, the 23rd November, when the following lots of land were sold, viz. : — 70 and 63 acres to Messrs Holmes and Barnwell, and 245 acres to Mr M'Eellar. The gold produce of the Otago Gold Fields from January, 1866, to the 17th November, 1866, was 145,963 ozs. 12 dwts. In giving this statement the Daily Times says : — " The total ex- j ports of gold from the Province of Otago, from j the time of the discovery of the Gold-fieldß until the end of the year 1865, amounted to , 1,875,154 ozs, the exports for the several years having been— lß6l, 187,695 ozs. ; 1862, 397,602 do ; 1863, 580,233 ; 1864, 455,927 : 1865, 253,696. Since the commencement of the year, 131,854 ozs have been exported, which, added to the above amount, gives a total export since the discovery of gold of 2,007,007 ozs. We are requested to intimate to the Freemasons throughout the Province that a grand banquet will be held at the Masonic Hall, Inrercargill, on St John's day, 28th December. We understand that every endeavor will be made to make the affair a complete success. We are informed that it is upwards of two years since a banquet has been held by the Masonic Brethren in Invercargill.
