The Sonthland Times. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1866.
We aro glad to hear that Mr Deck, whose labors amongst up have been so much appreciate \ has determined to remain in Invercargy l . & few days longer, and intends to lecture in St. Paul's Schoolroom this evening and preach in the Wesleyan Church on Sunday morning next, and in the Presbyterian Church in the evening. We clip the following sensible remarks anent the present political dilemma from a recent issue of t\\e° WaTcatip Mail:— "That the Province must rid itself of Northern affairs and their burdensome complications is apparent ; our Customs dutj.es, stamp duties, and, in fact, every tax is going to feed the North. A desperate step is necessary: that step is now shown to be the only hope, and Financial Separation seems to be the only remedy. We hardly think under such circumstances the elector here will be wise in encouraging a continual difference of opinion amongst members. With that difference of opinion existing, a 9 during the last session, we have no check upon members, and they become either the instruments of Ministers, or act for personal reasons rather than for a public motive. A general policy must be enforced, and to that members should be compelled to adhere. There has been enough of disunion at Wellington, without endeavoring to keep it alive in the province itself. We trust therefore that the electors will judiciously exercise their influence, and not give way to appeals for a clean coat of whitewash until the effects of the session are more clearly uuderstood. One thing they must carefully guard themselves against, and that is the pitting of the country v. town. This will be a ruinous policy, but it will be nevertheless attempted."
