A very urgent want has been supplied by the compilation by the Registrar of Brands of a very comprehensive and minute register of the brands of rattle, &c, of the various stockowners in the Province. We published, in our last issue, a sample of the "Brand Book," copies of which maybe obtained^ from T. K. Weldon, Esq., the Eegistrar. Tenders for the erection of a* bridge over the Oreti, at the site of the present ferry, is called for. This will be a great boon to our Riverton friends, as there has hitherto been considerable danger in crossing by the ferry. It is also a step in the ri<*ht direction to facilitate the increased traffic that may be expected by the opening up of the Riverton Goldfields. From our advertising columns it will be perceived that tenders are called for the conveyance of the mails throughout the Province during the ensuing twelve mouths. The first item provides for the conveyance of mails twice weekly between Oampbelltown and Invercargill. This apparently ignores the existence of a railway to the Bluff. We should imagine that mails would be more speedily conveyed by rail than coach. The proposed tax upon Bonded Warehouses is as follow : — Containing under 200 tons, £25 per annum ; 200 tons and under 500, £50 do ; 500 tons and under 1000, £75 do j 1000 ton 3 and upwards, £100 do. The mail via Panama is now several days over due. It was ever our impression that those who anticipated that this mail service would uperaede that of the Suez line were laboring under a delusion that would prove to be a mirage of the imagination. There is no record of a new undertaking of similar magnitude being undertaken and perfected in less than three or five years of intense application and perseverance on the part of the managers of tho company. The Panama service has had great difficulties to contend with from the . first, and the recent dispute between New south Wales and New Zealand proves that as far as this Oolo»y is concerned, tho Panama route is not likely to be of that importance as was first anticipated. This hitch, ought to be sufficient to convince the advocates of the Panama scheme that the time is far distant when the colony can consider itself independent of the Suez line for itß mail communication it is to be hoped the Government will see the necessity oj continuing both line 3 with Europs. The farmers in the interior report that the winter has been unprecedented as far as the growth of seed is concerned, that vegetatian is most prolific, and should the even and genial weather which has been experienced during the past few weeks continue for a short time longer we may expect more plentiful crops than hay* fee«ngleanedfor several seasons.

To a certain extent they have been made, but hare in many instances, been allowed to become to fearfully dilapidated that our Chief Commissioner of Police would be justified in issuing instructions to have all arrested under Martin's Act for all and everyone who could perpetrate the cruelty to animals of compelling the poor beasts to tug a load through any street in the town except Dee and Tay Streets. If the governmeut cannot do what is wanted, might not puhlio enterprise do something.
