COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.

The subjoined is the latest commercial intelligence from Auckland ; it is extracted from t, c " Southern Cross" of the 25th u!t. : — The news by the English mail as to the shipments to their market is ndt of a nature to effect prices to any extent, and no great alteration in any class of article can be looked for as long as the » .resent fulness of trade continues. Wines and spirits are quoterl low in the home market, but prices here are not such as to encourage large consienments. As t > kauri gum, we learn that the commercial panic in Hngkncl, Knd (he outbreak of war on the Continent, had made the demand somewhat slack. As this state of things \» a3 pr.-tty well anticipated, pr"'-es here will not be much effected. We quote rat < at, from cl 3to £24 ; case sum, scraped, £20 t) *35. The Queen of the North sailed for London on th • 21 st, with a cargo of kauri gum, flax, wool, &c. The declared value of the kauri gum on board anonnted to £13,875. Several vessels have sailed f ■• the Australian colonies with cargoes of timb r. &c. Mr S. Coehrane held an important sale of Auckland la , whale oil. whalebone, groceries, oilmen's stores, at his mart in Fort-street to-day. There was a pood attendance of merchants and dealers, and very fair prices were realised upon the whole. The fo'lo wing are the quotations :— Oil, £40 per ton ; whalebone, 9d per lb ; New Zealand flax, £30 per ton ; currants 6£d per lb ; raisins, 8d ; muscatels, 9i i ; Hooart Town jams, lls a dozen ; jams (Wotherspoon's), 10s 6d ; marmalade (Norton's), 103 6d; bottled fruit, 10s per dozen; arrowroot, 9d per lb ; sauces, 10s 6d per dozen ; mustard, lid per lb ; cherry cordial, 18s per dozen; oyst-rs, 12s; salmon, 17s 6d ; salad oil, half- ints. 103 3d ; pints, 17s per dozen ; bottled salt, 7» 3d per dozen ; soap powder, 9s per gross ; niMizrna, 7£d per lb; split peas, 4d per lb ; fine oatmeal. 3£d per lb ; tea. Is 8d per lb, in bond ; tea, ex Wave ley. ll^d perlb, in bond ; Mauritius crystals, s£<J to :,£d per lb ; tartaric acid, la lid per lb ; rat on sugar, B£d, in bond. We are in receipt of our Otoga files to the sth in st., and extract from the "Daily Times," the litest commercial intelligence, from the issue of the 3rd rast. : — The niarkets have exhibited but little activity during the pa«t week, arid transictioi s in all desm^'Of.s r.f imponed goods have, with one excepion 'the sale of sugars by auction) been .■red t ■ curr-r>t requirements. Tie news to h :J via Penana furnished no immediate stin lius to business, nor affected the prospecla 01 the market sensibly ; but was of a sufficie ntly e?couraj:in ■ % racter to warrant the conclusion that in a .«' ot'.\ ime tra le will regain actirity, and that values .^r all staple goods will be fairly maintained In the meantime importers and traders are generally satisfied not to force business uuiii after receipt of the mails via Suez. Opera tin; sin the flour ioarki.t have been confined to he sale of a few small lots of Chilian and South \us»ralian. at price.- at about last qnoted. The »uciion «»le of sugars on the 28th has been the only thing to note in this article. Of the 2220

bags pkred, nearly the whole wwo fine yellow and white orystals ; prices, on the whole, easier than late current rates. In teas, numerous small sales have made up a fair aggregrata business, without, however, any improvement in value. Stocks in importers' hands ai'e rapidly diminishing, and the spring demand will soon be felt. But little business has been done in malt liquors of any kind among importors ; there have been no transactions in bulk a es, and but trifling sales of beers in bottle. Spirits and wines of fair and good quxlities have been in some inquiry, but the t-ales call for no special notice in both articles, the state of stocks forbids any consider, hie or speoulutive operations. Provisions without alteration ; the transactions have not exceeded the placing of a few cases of bacon and hams. We take the following commercial intelligence from the " LytWlton Times." Ist September :— The import markets are extremely quiet; the trade as usual, towards the end of the month, evincing great unwillingness to operate to any extent. The extreme caution lately exercised by our readers is, we think, by no means to be regretted ; it evinces a due appreciation of their position, and should only lend to inspire confidence amongst the com community. Ale in bulk is n:il in very limited supply. Bottled ported is enquired for and we can hardly look for heavy shipments of this article for some time, in ( 'ilmen's stores importers are now able to assort their stocks by shipments to hand by the Bombay, which vessel is discharging hi-r cargo with unusuiil celerity. Candles are mare plentiful.- We hear of some demand for bacon and hams. Cheese is also in fair request. Brewers appeur well supplied with malt and hops although the quality of some sanipks now in stock is very inferior. Eastern product; is hardly so firm, which may be attributed to advices lately to hand from Australia. Many articl. sof American manufacture are in light stock. A direct cargo may, however, we presume, be shortly looked for. In colonial produce, oats are difficult of sale even at a reduced figure, Bacon and hams are being ibrced into the market, at rates *vhieh can hardly pay the curers. We do not hear of any parcels of cheese offering. There is no alteration in quotations for flour. We have no transactions to record hi the grain and flour mark t. Jn flour there is n t ling doing beyond that required for home con v nption. We quote it at £16. Wheat is freely offered at ss, with few buyers. Bran and sharps meet with a ready sale, the former at £8 15s Od, and the latter at £7 I 1 s Od. Oats continue at our last quotations, viz ,ss6d to 6s ; the market is fully stocked. Peas, what few are in the market are m the hands of retailers, an 1 fetch lOs for seed. Potatoes, £3 to £3 10s Od, are inactive, in the absence of orders for shipment.
