The " Daily Times. 24th August has the following commercial intelligence : — ! But little is doing in the import market, and the country trade is again quiet. A few goods are exporting, but no briskness is observable in that department of business. The price of imported flour has given way, and we hear of £15 being taken for parcels of moderate extent. The arrival of the Rachel from Valparaiso, with nearly 9000 bags, has had a depressing effect, and sales of heavy parcels cannot be at present made. South Australian flour is not held in stock very largely, but it has suffered to an equal degree with other foreign flours. Provisions are very inactive, and the sale of small retail parcels it all that can be reported. Malt liquors, both bulk and bottled, are going off very slowly, but the values are maintained. The tea market wears & better aspect, but no improvement in price can be noted ; in sugars, nothing is likely to be done pending the auction sale to take place on 2Sth. The "West Coast Times," of the 18th, reports : — Business for the current week ha? maintained the satisfactory character we were able to report in in our issue of the ll th inst. Several vessels, fully due, having arrived with well assorted cargoes, have given an impetus to trade by a very seasonable addition to our small stocks. No material alteration in prices can be noted ; the bulk oi' goods imported during the week have come for '■ own trade," and not put into the market for immediate sale, ha.s tended materially to keep prices steady. Houses doing business at Kanieri. Rosstown, and the new rush at t*e Stafford hill, have been well employed dv ing the week, and the quantity of goods sent to the goldfields may be taken as indicative of the prospects of each locality. Mr G. W. Binney submitted to public competition portions of the cargo of the Maid of Erin, and placed 100 eases of Blood's stout at los 6d per dozen ; also, fifty cases Byass' stout I6s ; and at his rooms in Revell-street, a J coi-siderab'.e amount of drapery, which was freely purchased at satisfactory prices. At the unreserved sale, held by M'Laudress, Hepburn and Co., at their rooms, on the I7th instant, very good price* were reaJised. The goods appear to have bten wanted. The same firm has also placed the cargo of timber, ex Stanley, consisting of about 8. OJO feet ; the pri<"e has not transpired, but is understood to be satisfactory. The "Observer," of the 18th instant, reports : — There has not, during the week, been any materia! alteration in the aspect of business, nor any change in prices worthy of quotation. With the improvement in the weather there has been more activity among puckers, but generaUy business has continued quiet. No article seems in special demand or scarce. All anxiously look for an improvement in trade shortly, and it will, doubtless, come at no very distant date. Hokitika and Greymouth have suffered several such temporary dullnesses as seem now to ie our lot, but both places seem at present to have recovered, and we do not fear of having our proportion of briskness in due time. Meantime, the population being attracted to the new rushes northwards, not only brings a slackness in sales, but an extra c_u-efulneso on the part of the storekeepers in selling, as not a few purchases have been ■made r^ceatly with the kno -;■;-;. i.- ; of the '■."■■- ! -'";:•:.-.--• '..- '.-* "■'. _•. y. -.. .- it. _■':, = r y. .-:.■■■•; 'ire ry,\ •:•; -.-■-.. .-- - - .y: >-.: y.fi' r ;:■-,-•.-.
