RIVERTON COMMERCIAL.
Fob the Month op July, 1866. ♦
» The Canterbury Press, of the 6th inst., says : — The arrival of the Talbot, from London, wiU have the effect of replenishing stock of several articles which were becon ing very bare, and also easing prices in some things which have naturaUy risen in value of late from scarcity of stocks. Saturday last, the fourth of the month, passed over quietly, and bills were generaUy weU met. A scarcity of money, however, stiU exists, and no speculative tendency has, aB a matter of course, been exhibited, although such articles as sugars are looked forward to as subject to a further advance. Coals are very bare; the Cantero and Golden Age have arrived from Newcastle with 90l> tons, and the King of Italy is also daUy expected with another consignment. Flour stands at £16 per ton for first quaUty ; second do, £14 10s. Bran and sharps maintain the rise of the previous week, with ready sale at those prices. Wheat is steady at 5s to 5s 6d per bushel for miUing purposes ; clear TaJavera, for seed, 6s 6d to 7s 6d, according to sample. Oats are in fair demand at 6s ; fine seed oats command 7s 6d. Barley is enquired for also for seed purposes, and 8s is given for best colonial ; a sample of imported Chevalier is in the market at 12s 6d. •No quantity of peas are in the market ; small lots are quitted at 7s 6d. Beans are also scarce at the same price. At Mr W. Wflson's cattle sale on Saturday a good mob was offered, and readily quitted at late high prices. One mUch cow of fair quaUty was sold for £21, and others for Uttle less. Stores ranged from £9 to £12, and every lot effered was cleared. Hokitika:— The "Leader" of August 3, reports : In consequence of the paucity of arrivals during the past ten days, the markets have been nnusuaUy bare of many leading articles, and prices have displayed a decided upward tendency. This has been especially the case with oats, bran, and colonial produce generaUy, and with wines and spirits of good brands. As trading transactions have, however, ceased altogether t« be of a speculative character, and as the present dearth of stocks is expected to be only temporary, pending expected arrivals, the effect has not gone beyond rendering rates firm at a slight advance, and no difficuity has been experienced in executing such orders as have to come to hand during the week. It would be of little use to quote ruling prices, as doubtless during the next few days the markets wUI be abundantly supphed by arrivals of produce, now on their way from the neighboring colonies. Gbeymouth. — The Argus of August 4, reports : — The amount of revenue received at the Customs on goods cleared for home consumption on Thursday and Friday was as foUows : — Thursday, August. 2, £13 15s ; Friday, August 3, £151 5s lr* "E*--r.rt entries for gold were passed as s'..>l!(.»we : - uy-Ow, Br*-*!-; of New South WsJ*. j

The tone of the trade during the week has been much firmer, and a considerable business has been done in articles of every-day consumption at improved rates. Buyers have been active purchasers for the new rush at Saltwater, and a fair business has likewise been done with.the up-river storekeepers. Breadstuffs have improved somewhatin value, with an upward tendency. Adelaide flour may be quoted £26 to £27 per ton ; Christchurch and Dunedin. £22 to £23. Of CaUfornian and ChiUan the market is bare. In horsefeed, a fair business has been done. The stock of oats is light, and 8s per bushel has been obtained by auction, with a still upward tendency. The market is well supplied with cbaff, wnich may be quoted at £23 to £24 per ton. Bran has been disposed of at auction at 2s 7d to 2s 9d per bushel. In provisions, hams and bacon maintain their value, and and tbe late disposition to force sale 3is not now discernible. Sinclair's and Coey's ' are valued at Is 8d to Is 9d per lb. Good butter brings full rates, and for prime samples 2s 6d to 2s 7d per lb is demanded. Candles are rather mo<*e plentiful, and are value Is 8d to Is 9d per lb. Good medium teas are saleable at £5 10s to £6 per half-chest. Sugars are unaltered in value. Mauritius brown crystals, £oO to £52 per ton, duty paid ; white do, £53 to £56, as in quality.
