CHIMNEYS A-FIRE.

(to the editob oe the southland times.) Sir, — Within the last month three chimneys have been on fire in town, viz. Mr Kobertsons, Mr Broads, and Mr Colyers. Why have the police selected the latter, and omitted the other two ? Some people say that the onus probendi lies with police to show that the chimneys were foul, and the fire was caused by the foulness thereof, and its only in cases where direct proof of the foulness can be given that proceedings are taken. If Mr Editor there is any doubt as to the application of the law would it not be advisable to select a case to put the matter at rest ? — Tours truly, Ait Obseeyee. Invercargill, 11th August.
