COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.

SorTHLA2a> Tijess Office, Monday Evening. The following are the Custom Beturns for — Moxdat, 6th August.

♦ \ Syd>-ey. — The " Sydney Morning Herald" of July 14, remarks : — The receipt of English intelligence, per B.M.S. Bombay, has. for the time being, brought trade to almost a stand-still, and the uncertainty which exists as to the full effects of the reported crisis, is expected to have a prejudicial effect upon trade ■until the arrival of the June mails. The local banks have made no alteration, at present in their rates or discount, nor has their position been in any way affected by recent advices. The Agra j and Masterman's Branch Bank is the only monetary institution connected with the banks which have stopped payment in London. The Sydney branch has never been a bank of issue, and its colonial liabilities are confined to deposits on interest and drafts recently purchased, which will probably be dishonored on presentation. Some inconvenience may arise to those who have forwarded Agra Bank credits on account of goods ordered, but against loss resulting from the nonreeeipt of such goods there will be the increased value which stocks of a similar character now in the colony wui nave in consequence. The stock share brokers report a very dull week, attributable ehieny to the reported continuation of the commercial crisis in England, rendering capitalists cautious about investing until the re suits of the crisis are fully known. Transactions have been very limited. Treasury biDs are becoming scarce, and have been placed at par. 2few Zealand Government debentures at -|- per cent, premium, and A. S. K. Company's debentures at par. The Buabine (s.) cleared at the Customs to-day for Weili- gion and Panama, with 30,000 sovereigns on freight, and a number of passengers. The price of coals remains steady at last month's rates. Heavy shipments to "M«-nfl« 3 Java, and Shanghai have been made from, tbfe colony during the past fortnight. " Morgan's British Trade Journal " of June 2nd says : — '* Consols, which, closed last month at 87, eiose this month at 86$ . the range of fluctuations having been between 85f and 87£. The demand for money is fuily sustained at the Bank rate, and though the worst of the crisis has been passed, the process of recovery threatens to be slow. A complete collapse in. values of several classes of securities has taken -place upon the Stock Exeiiange. Sack and finance shares have been th« Eiost unfavorably affected.
