COMMEECIAL INTELLIGENCE.

Southland Times Office, Saturday Evening. Ths foUowing are the Custom Returns for—

— ♦"" ■ ' We are in receipt of Otago papers to the lst August. We take the foUowing commercial article from the " DaUy Times," of the 30fch July :— The amount of business done through the week has been moderate, and scarcely any transactions ' exceeding actual requirements have come under notice. The last inteUigence from Britain would, it was expected, have led to increased activity ; but such has not yet been the case, although beyond do»bt that shipments from home wUI not just now be increased, and that prices can suffer no material alteration at present. The flour market, though duU, and with transactions restricted to very small parcels, is nominaUy unaltered. The sale of imported has been lessened by the unusually full supply of provincial, and the bulk of the" last cargo is still in importers' hands. Sugars or teas have not been active, the former maintains its high value, especially for good counters and low crystals; the latter has a tendency to improvement, and for good congous holders who have lately been doing businees with very little margin, are now seeking more remunerative prices. Next to nothiis" has been done in provisions ; it is probable that importers would liave made sales at the reduced rates now obtainable, rather than have taken the chance of the market rallying ; but for the past few days buyers held off. in the anticipat"o!i than an auction sale on the 27th would bave established much lower quotations ; the parcel referred to was, however, withdrawn. Spirits and wines show no activity ; nothing of any importance in these goods has transpired, nor are values changed. For malt liquors (both in bulk and in bottle), importers are just now experiencing but a light demand, though stocks of bottled stouts, and bulk ales of good brands are sufficiently Umited to warrant a better business ; rates are Ukely to be fuliy mainta ned, and it is extremely probable' that when the season closes there wUI be a little, if any. bulk beers in first hands. Corn sacks are a Uttle lower — 16s 6d has been accepted for a parcel. There is no disposition at present to operate in malt • rates are very v.t-- compared with those obtained a short time part, I
