ORIGINAL POETRY. 4» ■ , THE VILLAGE CHURCH. By Elza Willson. Around the old church there are green grassy mounds, Where wafting their scent on the breeze, The fragrant blue violets spring blythe from the ground, 'Neath the shade of the sheltering trees. Upon the old church, with its waUs aU grown grey, The ivy is twisted and twined, And sweet thrilling sounds on a calm Sabbath Day, Are borne on the whispering wind. Within the old church, through the quaint diamond panes, When tbe course of the bright day is done, .And slowly and softly in beauty now wanes, Tha Ught Of the fast dying sun. Steals lingering and brightly a last golden ray, And plays down the gloomy old aisle, A bright fareweU beam, and it dies far away, And darkness is round the old hUI. InvercargiU, 2nd August, 1866. — «. _ LITTLE THINGS. Little eyes, little eyes, Twinkling, star-like, on the sea Of aU our troubles, all our sadness, Heaven-born Ughts are ye. Little feet, little feet, Falling on our humble floor, * Bringing faith, and hope, and gladness, Where doubt was before. Little hands, little hands, Softly, meekly, clasped in prayer j Pleading at the gates of heaven For the loved ones theie. Little heart, Uttle heart, Beating out the golden hours, Coining aU that life hath given Into buds and flowers. Little thoughts, Uttle thoughts, Working in that little brain ; Restless, endless thoughts a-spwing ; Seeds for joy or pain. How I love ye ! how I love ye ! Tongue can never teU how much ! Life is doubly worth the knowing, When we Uve for such.
