SOUTHLAND. Bluff 25tTi July, ArriTed — Lord Ashley, from Hokitika, made the passage in 36 hours. Sailed — Lord Ashley, North. CANTERBURY. i Chbistchusch, 25th July. In the Assembly a few bills have been forwarded a stage, but everything seems to be held back until the separation debate has been finished. William Thomson has arrived at Wellington in the Esk, man-of-war. The Auckland has arrived at Hokitika, from Melbourne, bringing papers to the 17fch July. They report fearful gales and wrecks on the Sydney coast. The steamer Cawani foundered, and only one man savad. The other wrecks are the Lady Bower, Bangaree, and West Hartley, steamers ; the Roderick Dhu, Esk, Carnation, William Watson, Caroline, Lismore, Seagull, and several ■ names unknown. The force of the gale was so strong that it broke over the gap into Watson's Bay, tke Dondi, and the Middle Head. Grreville and Co. have written to the Argtis stating that the telegram announcthat war had commenced in Europe, was not Reuter's. It had been published as news in Columbia. The authenticity of the telegram is doubted. The commercial business in Melbourne has recovered from the depressing influence the recent English news had at first. Former prices are more than sustained ; large shipments of sperm caudles and kerosene had been adevieed.
