The Wreck ov tite Wtt/d Wate — We regret to find that tho brief intimation of a wreck in Pelorus Sound published in these column r yesterday hnd reference to the schooner Wild Wave, Cnptnin Ifwersen. which was in this port ftr alteration at Mr Beddoes's yards only a short time since. It will be remembered that the Wild Wave was ketch-rigged, and on her last trip to this port was taken over to the North Shore, where she was converted into a smart topsail schooner, and received a thorough outfit of new sails and gear, at considerable outlay to her owner. The cause of the accident is described as attributable to a sudden chop round of wind, which blew her bnck, stern under* Captain Ifwersen, who is well known and respected at this port, escaped by swimming upwards of n mile. The crew were drowned.
The Haveloclc correspondent of the "Marlboroucrh Press" gives the following particulars of the loss, although we cannot, endorse his very novel mode of accounting for the accident : — " I am sorry to inform you of another terrible disaster — the news of which only reached Havelock on Sunday last. The schooner. Wild Wave, Capt. Tfwersen.* was caught in the terrific gale on Thursday, the 21st ultimo, in the Pelorus Sound, near Opawa Bay. about sixteen miles from Havelock, and capsized. Five of the crew were drowned, and the captain and the cook only saved their lives by swimming a distance of over » mile to the shore, somewhere at Messrs. Hills' place. They are at present at Messrs. Cawtes' place in the Sound, to which place they were conveyed by boat. The vessel was insured for £1,000. It appears that- the vessel, formerly a centre-board barge, has been altered lately into a topsail schooner, the centre-board having been taken away ; and this. I believe, accounts for this terrible loss of life. Mr Pilliet and some of tho Custom-house officers have started for the scene of the disaster, but have not yet returned."
