Miskin left the Grey on Sunday, 14th inst ; Hokitika, same evening ; experienced strong head winds all the passage ; arrived at the wharf at 11 a.m. on the 20th, and sailed for Dunedin same day. The " Lyttelton Times " writes — For tho information of those interested, we publish the following particulars, obtained by our shipping reporter from the Captain of the three-masted schooner, the Storm Bird, now discharging timber from Stewart's Island. On March 3rd, the Storm Bird anchored at Murray River, Stewart's Island, bound to Newcastle, N.S.W. ; the mate and two of the crew went fishing, and when returning called on board a schooner, lying at anchor, and found her to be the " Jessie," of Dunedin, from Tnvercargill to Hokitika. The Captain stated that he had several times tried to get to the westward, but had always been driven back. A>t 2 a.m. on March 4th, the " Jessie " and Storm ±$ird got under way, and proceeded through Foveaux Straits ; at six o'clock p.m., sighted the Solander, bore south 11 miles, and the Jessie bore at five miles ; the wind at E. increasing at 4 a.m ; blowing strong, the barometer registering 2870 and falling, was obliged to take in all light sails ; at 6 a.m. the wind suddenly changed to N.E., blowing a hurricane, clewed up everything, but the sails were blown to ribbons before they could be furled, the vessel almost on her beam ends without a stitch of canvas on. Nothing more was seen of the Jessie afterwards : since then the Storm Bird lias made a voyage to Newcastle and back, and on returning to Stewart's Island for the cargo to this port, it was ascertained that a life boat had been picked np near to Mason's Bay on the west side of the Island, marked Jessie, Punedin ; also a small cask marked James Allen. The parties who picked up the above state that they saw distinct traces of the wrecks of two vessels. One appears to have been a large vessel, her lower mast having been cut away by tha deck.
