MiscellaneousTHE NEW CUSTOMS TARIFF ACT, 1864. WHE^AS it is expedient to alter the duties of Custom* payable on the importation o<" (roods, wares, aue merchandise into the Colony of X("f Zealand :— Be it therefore enacted by the General Assembly of New Zealand, in the Parliament assembled as follows : — I. The Short Title of this Act shall be the New Customs Duties Act, 1864. 11. The duties of Customs chargeable upon croods. wares, and merchandise, imported into the Colony of New Zealand, shall cease and determine from and after the Bth of December, 1R64. ITT. From and after the Bth day of December, One Thousand eight hundred and sixty-four, in lien of such duties the following dut ; es of Customs shall be charged on all poods, wares, and merchandise hereinafter specified, imported into the Colony of New Zealand, or cleared from any warehouse for home consximptlon, that is to say : — £ s. d. 1. Manufsctm'es of silk, cotton linen, and wolen, and all articles manufactured therefrom : drapery, haberdashery, hosiery, millinery, furs, hats, boot?, shoe?, confectionery, bottled fruits dried fruits, mustard, olive oil, pickles, preserves, sauces, spices, and oilmen's stores of all kinds, measuring outside the packnrres — the cubic foot 0 5 0 8. Spirits, and strong waters of every kind, sweetened or otherwise, of any strength not exceeding the strength of proof by Syke's hydrometer, and so on in proportion for any greater strength than the strength of proof — the gallon 0 12 0 9. Wine in wood containing less than than twenty-five per cent of nlcohol of a specific gravity of .R25 at the temperature of 60 i degrees Fahrenheit's [thermometer I v —the gnllon .' 0 4 0 j 13. Wine, in bottle, containing less than twenty-five per cent of alcohol of a specific gravity of 8.25 at the temperature of 90 degrees Fahrenheit's thermometer —the gallon 0 5 0 14. Anchors and chains and rod, bolt, bar. and sheet, hoop and pig iron ; and nails, sailcloth, cordage' twine, cotton, yarn, bags, stick?, and woolpacks, spirits of tar and turpentine, tobacco for pheepwash, nuts af all kinds, powder only fit for blasting purposes, and all unenumerated goods, wares, and merchandise Free. TV. A drawback of the whole of such duties shall br allowed for wines intended for the consumption of the officers of Her Majesty's troops in the Colony of New Zealand, and of the officers of Her Majesty's navy serving on board any of Her Majesty's ships in the seas adjoining thereto, or such wines may he landed on first importation, or delivered out of bond of free duty, subject in all cases to such regulations as the Governor shall from time to time prescribe. Provided always, that if any such wines shall be subsequently sold in the said colony except for the use or consumption of any of Her Majesty's military or naval officers as aforesaid, the same shall be forfeited and liable to seizure accordingly. V. All duties of Customs under this Act shall be charged and paid according to the standard imperial weights and measures, and where such duties are charged according to any specific quantity, weight or size, the same shall be chargeable rateably on any greater or less quantity, weight or size. VI. The duties of the Customs imposed by this Act shall be raised, levied, and paid under the provisions of " The Customs Regulation Act, 1858," and subject also to all such provisions and regulations as may for the time being "bo in force for the collection, management, and receipt of the duties of import in the Colony of New Zealand. VII. The " Customs Duties Amendment Act, 1861," and the Military supplies Customs Act. 1862," shall apply to all duties of Customs payable Tinder this Act. VIII. In the event of any increase under this Act in the duties of Customs chargeable upon any goods, wares, or merchandise, after the mak ng ef any contract or agreement for the sale ior delivery of such goods duty free, it shall be lawful for the seller, in case such increase shall accrue before the clearance and delivery from the warehouse of such goods at such increased duty and after payment thereof to add so much, moned to the contract price as will be equivalent o such increase of duty, and he shall be entitledj o be paid and to sue for and recover the same. EXTRAORDINARY CURE OF A COUGH. The following letter has been addressed to Mr Powell by William Boards, Esq., an extensive Agriculturist and Land Agent, residing at Edmonton, Middlesex : — Nightingale Hall, Edmonton. " Dear Sir, — I have recently suffered much from a most violent cough, proceeding from a tickling in my chest, which no remedy, out of mauy I resorted to, could allay. My head was constantly aching, aud my whole frame entirely shaken. Having seen the good effects of your Balsam of Aniseed iv several members of my family, I purchased a small bottle, and when going to bed at night took a teaspoonful in two table spoonfuls of water just warm. The effect was immediate ; it arrested the tickling in my chest, I slept well, and arose perfectly restored in the morning, with the exception of debility, arising from fatigue by incessant coughing for some days previous. My cough entirely left me, and has never returned. Having/ since heard of a lady in the neighborhood who for a leng time had labored under a moft distressing cough, and who had resorted to every remedy within her knowledge, I sent the remainder of the bottle to her ; and that long-standing obstinate, and (as she thought) incurable cough, was perfectly cured. You are at perfect liberty to make what use you Jiay please of this communication, as the contents are strictly true.
