It will bs seen from our advertising columns that the time fixed for public vaccination afc the Hospital is every Monday evening, between the hours of 11 and 12 o'clock. We would draw the attention of parents to this notice, it is an important pare of their duty to have their children vaccinated, and is morally as well as legally a crime to neglect it ; all who do so are liable to be brought before the Resident Magistate and heavily lined. At a meeticg of the Waste Land Board, held on .Friday, when there were present the Chief Commissioner, Chief Surveyor, aud Duncan M'Artimr, Esq. The following application for land wore grauten : Samuel Campbell, 100 acres, Forest ilill Hundred ; Archibald Grilohrist, 129 acres, 1 rood, 4 perches, section 29, block 8 Jacobs' Elver Hundred ; William Walker, 148 acres, 1 rood, IS perclies, section 1, block G, Winton Hundred ; M. 6cott, 200 acres, Wairio District, Hun, 142. The total amount realised at this days' sale amounted to £577, making a total for the week of £8,575. The Provincial Treasurer, John Blacklock, Esq., has returned from J&unedin. It is understood that favorable results to the interests of the Province may be expected from the visit to Duneciin of Mr Blacklock. A number of prisoners have been engaged during the week in executing some very necessary work about town, such as cleansing drains, repairing roads, &c. it is to be hoped they will extend their operations along the side drain in Esk-slreefc, commencing from the corner of Dee-sti-eet. The drain is nearly choked up ; and its exposed condition renders it highly uungerou3. It would but cost a few pounds to place it in a sound state. V» r e understand that the Bluff Harbor and Invercargill Eailway will shortly be opened for traffic. Great credit is due to the enterprising contractors, Messrs Smyth, Hoyt & Co. for the energetic way in which they have pushed forward the works. We are not aware whether the difliculties said to have existed between the contractors for a portion of the line and the G-overn-ment have been arranged, but it is to be hoped that no impediments will be thrown in the way of the speedy working of the line. The Grovernment has called for tenders for 500 facines to be delivered on the road-side near Wallacclown. Tenders will bo received till Friday, 29th June, noon. The BiuiT Harbor Master notifies that about the Ist August the cask-buoy painted red on the east end of the Land Spit will be removed, and a large cove-buoy surmounted by a staff and ball pKced there in its stead. This will be a great impro.ement, and no doubt will be appreciated by those who visit the port. A public reading of " Zeta's" Essay on Southland, as a field for immigration will take place at Theatre .Royal this evening (Monday, 25th June) . We understand that although the writer was not awarded the prize, the production is of considerable merit; .nuch labor and time has been bestowed upon it, and the public should as a small recompense for services rendered, attend this public reading. It was advertised for Friday evening last, but owing to the boisterous state of the weather, the attendance was small, and it was deemed advisable to postpone it until this evenin ■>-, when it is to be hoped that all interested in the future of Southland will attend.
