LEASING THE RAILWAYS.
The Chairman said that before the Chamber separated, and seeing the strong muster there was present, he would like to mention one other item of business, viz. — the leasing of the railway. Th c Government very kindly invited the co operation of the Chamber on this subject, and it would be for those present to make any suggestions which might be deemed advisable. Several members expressed a doubt as to the functions of the Chamber on this particular question ; but the majority appeared to be in favor of ventilating the subject. One of the members of the ] Government, who was present, stated that he believed it was the intention of i the G-overnment to make arrangements with parties who 'would undertake j to finish the Northern Line on cer- \ tain terms, and leaseboth lines — Northern and Southern. It was ultimately resolved, after con- j siderable discussion, .to appoint the following committee, to co-operate with the Government on this question, and report j the result of their labors to the Chamber ; on a future occasion. The Committee comprise the following gentlemen i Messrs j Law, M'Pherson, and Maore. The Cbtpfow fchp adjourned.
The following appeared in the Police Gazette of the 9th of June :— Malicious Injury to Property. On the night of the 18th ultimo, a whaleboat, the property of William Livesey, Invercargill, was maliciously injured by some person at present unknown, by having two holes knocked in her bottom with some blunt instrument, while she was lying on the beach near the InrercargUl jetty.
