The Southland Times. TUESDAY, JUNE 12, 1866.
Old King Frost has again paid us a visit. The last two days has been intensely cold, and yesterday morning all the pools of water were frozen over, and the ice in many places, half-an-inch thick. The morning was fine and bracing, and many, not noted for their early rising, might have been seen, by way of an appitizer before breakfast, amusing themselves by breaking the ice and measuring its thickness. The weather, although what is denominated severe, is unmistakably seasonable and healthy. The Road Eoard will meet this afternoon, and as several applications for land have been received, we expect in our next issue to be able to state that another installment has been paid towards the liquidation of Southland's debt. We would again remind the members of the Chamber of Commerce that_the general meeting is called for this afternoon. It is to be hoped that they will muster in force and evidence a determination to once more go into harness and work in right earnest. The Chinese are gradually increasing in Otago. For some months passed a large number have been at work on old ground in tho vicinity of Gatrial'd Gully, and we have not heard of any crimes having been committed by them. From the Dunsian Times, 2nd Juno, wo learn they have made their appearance in the Dunßtan district. It gays s— " John Chinaman haa ut last paid a visit to tho Dunstan, Tea interesting specimens of the tflowery Lund arrived at Clyde, by wag* gon, from Dimedin, on Monday last, They have already commenced wanning thfl gravelly beaches
