THE SOUTHLAND DEBTS ACT.
The following correspondence has heen kindly placed at our disposal, by his Honor the Superintendent for publication : — Colonial Secretary's Office, Wellington, 26th April, 1866. Sir, — I have to acknowledge the receipt of your Honor's letter of the 27th ultimo, in which you transmit certain resolutions of the Southland Provincial Council, on the effect of the 15th section of "The Southland Provincial Debts Act, 1865," and generally on the mode of payment of the Provincial Debts. In reply, I have to inform your Honor that copies of your letter, and of the resolutions enclosed in it, will be laid before the General Assembly next session. "With respect to the assurance which you suggest the Grovernment should give of its intention not to act under the powers given by the 15th section referred to, the Grovernment can at once state that . these powers will not be used before the G-eneral Legislature has had an opportunity of reconsidering the whole question of the Southlanddebts, but your Honor will of course recognise that it is impossible to foresee what further action the Legislature may determine, to take ih the matter, and that it would be improper for any Grovernment to attempt to forestal it. 1 have the Honor to be, Sir, Your most obedient servant, E. W. Stafford. His Honor the Superintendent, Southland.
