The Phoebe, s.s. , left Port Chalmers at 1 p.m. on the 9th. Experienced light easterly weather and very thick fog : arrived alongside the wharf at 10 a.m. She ha 3an unusual large passenger list", and about 40 tons of cargo. The schooner Zephyr, 196 tons, of Melbourne, Captain White, saUed from InvercargiU, for Newcastle, on the 16th ult. Wind, N.W. When off Centre Island, the wind increased to a gale, with squaUs. About midnight, the foretopsaU blew away, AprU 17. — Strong winds, with squalls; worked ship to windward; wind, N.S.W., Solander Island, going S.W. half W. Wednesday, 18th. — Strong wind and cloudy, with rain, Cod Fish Island, E. by N.E., eight mUes ; at 8 p.m., storm increasing, with heavy sea : 10 p.m., strong gale, reefed foresaU, and close reefed topsaU ; 11 p.m., mainsail blew away ; midnight, the foretopsaU split ; bent a new mainsaU, and hove tte ship to, with her head to the eastward ; heavy. gale, with terrible squaUs, water gaining- on the pumps and mixing with the sand baUast : 7 a.m., Cod Fish Island, N.E., 10 mUes ; split the baUanced reefed mainsaU, wore ship round and run for shelter to Port WiUiam, Stewart's Island : 11 a.m., set the trysail, which completely blew away from the bolt ropes ; at noon came to anchor in Port WiUiam. Monday 23. — At 8 p.m., made saU in company with the Flying Buck and Helen a. Page: 6p.m., strong westerly winds ; took in aU light sails, Centre Island, W. half N. Tuesday, 24th, 8 a.m., weather moderate* set the foresail, 10 a.m., had squaUs, took in" the foresail, at noon strong W.S.W. winds, set the jib and shook reef out ofthe mainsaU. Wednesday, 25th, increasing breeze, Solander Island, W. half S-, lat. 46.40 south; 4 p.m., fresh gale, put ship under smaU sail ; 8 p.m., strong gale and hard squaUs, took in foresail and close reefed mainsail, ship laboring beavUy ; midnight heavy gale, with rain ; 2 a.m., mainsail blew away out of the boltrope, took in foretop-staysaU, and directed ship under close reefed topsaU. Thursday, 26th, 8 a.m., the gale increasing, with very heavy sea, ship leaking ; 10 a.m., Snares Island, S.E. 14 nules, wore ship at noon, heavy gale ; 4 p.m., gale stiU increasing, with heavy cross-sea, ship making water very fast, 3 feet in the hold, and washing the sand baUast forward, pumps kept going, wore ship ; at 8 p.m. hove ship to under balanced reefed mainsaU, ship on her beamends, and the pumps choked ; got them lifted up and put down in the after hatch, on the baUast, wore ship to get her upright ; midnight terrible gale, crew employed bailing water out with buckets, as the pumps got choked, and the water was gaining fast upon the ship ; 7 a.m. Snares Island, S.E., five miles, wore ship ; 2 a.m., shifted the pumps down the main hatch; noon, heavy gale, water stiU rising in the hold, Snares Island, south 18 miles. Friday, 27. — Strong gale, with Ughtning ; close reefed topsaU set ; water stiU gaining on the pumps, all hands kept bailing with buckets : 4 p.m., took in the topsaU, and hove ship to under baUanced reefed mainsail, seven feet water iv the hold ; crew aU exhausted with constant bailing : 6 p.m., pumps perfectly useless, and sand ballast mixed with the water : 6.30 p.m., crew informed the captain that the water was above the forcastle deck ; they were ordered to take their clothes into the catin : 7 p.m., gale stiU continued, and the ship laboring very heavy, with the water in her hold. The captain now determined to run for Stewart's Island. Set the close-reefed foretopsaU and foresaU ; 8 a.m., terrible gale, sea a white foam, crew stUl bailing with buckets, and the water gaining fast on the vessel ,• midnight, ship running before the gale. Saturday 20, gale still continued ; 2 a.m., made the land, the south-west cape of Stewart's Island, N.W. 10 mUes ; took in the foresaU and topsaU, and hove ship to tUI dayhght, crew BtUl kept baUing with buckets j 6 a.m., the captain seeing that the crew were completely exhausted and the ship near full of water, and fast becoming unmanagable, be decided, as an expedient in order to save the Uves of aU on board, to run her on the beach ; 7 a.m., Seal point, N.W., 7 mUes, wore ship, set, close reefed topsaU and foresail; noon, gale stiU blowing, and heavy squaUs ; 2 p.m., ship running close under the land to hnd a favorable place to beach her j 4 p.m., east head, W.S.W. The ship was now settling down fast by the head, and the Bea so heavy, that ao boat could live in it j 6 p.m., the ship was run on a sandy •beach, with 9 feet -miter in the hold* The crew
was landed safe in the boat, and the ship sails were got on shore, and used as tents for the Captain and crew; they: were unable to get away from this place owing to the weather ; when the weather did moderate, the Captain and a part of the crew proceeded to the Neck in the ship's boat' and were brought over here by the Maori boats.
