The s.s., William Miskin, after an absence of over two months, during which time she has been trading between the several rushes on the West Coast, returned to Port Clialmers yesterday forenoon. She left Hokitika on Sunday last, the 22nd inst., experienced head winds to Jackson's Bay, where she anchored at noon on Monday ; left at 9 o'clock seme evening. According to a notice to shipmasters appearing in the West Coast Times, in reference to the missing schooner Sangalier, Ca];£ain Hepburn stood close in to all the sounds along the coast, and observed two open boats, apparently trading from sound to sound. Stood close in to one of them.- No signals being made from the boat, proceeded on: her voyage, no sign of wreck wa3 observed on the coast. When off the West Cape, she encountered a severe gale, which commenced from N.W., aud veered round suddenly to S.W., with a heavy cross sea, during which the steamer behaved admirably* arrived at the Bluif at 1 p.m., on Wednesday ; left again at 3.20 p.m., and arrivedas above at 930 a.m. Through the courtesy of Captain Hepburn, we are in possession of full files of West Coast papers to the 21st inst. — Daily Times, 27th ApriL ■ The steamer Favorite has again returned to the port, to be employed as a tug-boat, under the management of one of her late owners, Capt. Djason, who a short time ago proceeded to Wanganui and effected her purchase. — Ibid. The Otago, s.s , Captain Eandal, left Port Chalmers at 5 p.m. on the 29th inst., reports strong- head winds to the Bluff, arriving at the ■wharf at 8 a.m. ; discharged about 30 tons cargo, and sailed for Melbourne, at 1 p.m. The N.Z.S.N. Company's Taranaki, s.s., Capt. Francis, arrived from Dunedin at 8.30 a.m. The Taranaki is the latest addition to the company's fleet, and is % built on the same lines a3 the Wellington, with the difference of two ftet more team and more length ; she is brig rigged, and her engines are the same as the Wellington, but more powerful ; her accommodation for all classes of passengers- is not to be surpassed, her cabin being fitted with ail the latest improvements ; her fore cabin especially deserves to be noticed as it is almost like a saloon, the seats being cushioned, quite a new idea in a fore cabin ; her speed is equal to vessels of double the power; this is shown by her trip here, in company with the Otago. The Taranaki is commanded by Capt. JTrancis, well known as Capt. of the Wellington. The Bluff Harbor presented quite a busy appearance to-day, the : wharf being occupied with three fine steamera, the P.N.Z company's Otago, Claud Hamilton, and N.ZS.N. company's fine new steamer Taranaki, also a number of lighters in. the stream, and one at the wharf loading from the Otago. The wharf has before been found to be much too small for the requirements of the port, but when the railway is open for traffic, it will be absolutely necessary to extend it. An adjoornid meeting of the Pilot Board was foeld in the Harbor Office, Port Chalmers, yesterday, present, Captain Thomson (in the chair) Captains Robertson, M'Einnon, and Mr Tayler. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed, when Mr Tayles presented a statement of accounts, showing that the average earnings of the pilots durin» the last six months was £24 7s Bsd each, per 'month. A copy of which was ordered to be sefet to the Superintendent, for the purpose of showing that supplementary aid was not at present required out of the £300 voted for that purpose by the Provincial Council when the earnings of the pilots did not exceed £210 per month,.

Pilot Gora was examined in reference to getting the barque Driver on the bank known as the Elbow off Deborah Bay. The pilot made a statement that the wind was light and baffling, at the time, and the vessel would not answer her helm. Captain Cumming, of the Driver, stated that the ship was handled to his satisfaction by Pilot Grorn ; that she steered generally wild — the wind was puffy and light when she touched on the bank. No other evidence being given, Pilot Gora was discharged with a caution to be more careful in future. A letter from Fisher Brothers was read, wishing the Board to notice the praiseworthy conduct of Pilot Kelly in boarding the brig Daniel Watson in a gale of S-W. wind, and beating her into port with the assistance of only j three hands belonging to the vessel, and hoped j that he would be remunerated by the Pilot Board drawing' the attention of Lloyd's egent and the underwriters to the matter. The secretary was instructed to write to the above. A resolution that the representative of the press be admitted to all meetings, closed the proceedings. — Ibid. Loss of the Schooner Yarra. — On Monday night, at 12 p.m., this vessel commanded by Captain M'Cullum, bound from Dunedin to Waikara, was totally lost, having stranded on the Ninety Mile Beach, two miles west of Waikara Lake. There were on boardSja, crew of five persons and four passengers, all of whom were saved. The mate and one of the passengers were slightly injured. The ship, which was in ballast, was dismasted on Wednesday, April 18. On the previons Sunday, the Yarra came into collision with the barque Eucalyptus in.Molyneux Bay, losing bowsprit and sustaining other damages. — I/yttelton Times.
