IMPERIAL CLAIMS UPON THE COLONS.
The following statement appears on the Supplementary Estimates presented to the House of Commons for the year 1855-6 : — " An estimate of the sum required in the year ending on the 31st March, 1866, to make good advances from the Treasury Chest in New Zealand, and from army grants, on account of expenses caused by the war in that colony, such advances being repayable by the Colonial Grovernment. " N.B. — The Colonial Government has already remitted to the Imperial Grovern? ment, on this account, JPour per Cent., Debentures, amounting to £500,000, which are held by Her Majesty's Government as collateral security towards the repayment to Her Majesty's Exchequer of these advances. £ 1. Advances from the Treasury Chesfc, between the years 1847-8 & 1848-9, on account of the pay and expenses of the Sew Zealand J?encibles . . 67,929 2. Advances from the Treasury Chest in 1861-2, to pay Colonial allowances to onicers of her Majesty's ships 5,000 3. Advances in cash to the Colonial Government, between August and December, 1863 186,000 4. Pay and allowances to local Militia and native levies, to 31st March, 1865, due to Army grants . . . 67,700 i 5. Provisions, fuel, and light, and services paid by the Commissariat ' Department, to 31st March, 1865 187,500 6. Road-making, paid by the Commissariat Department, to 31st | March, 1865 31,800 7. Value of arms, stores, &c, supplied | by the War Department for tne use of Colonial forces, to 31st March, 1865 - 82,200 8. Hire of vessels to 31st March, 1865 16,4U0 9. Estimate ot further advances and supplies, made subsequently to 31st March, 1865 120,000 £764,829 " Treasury, Isth February, 1866."
