In an interesting communication to the Scientific American, explaining how to clear a boat of water without bailing, Mr J. S. Rcleston, of Indiana, Pennsylvania, writes : — " If you have a boat that leaks badly, and it is in a strong current, or if you are towing it up stream, all you have to do to keep it dry is this — bore a hole through the bottom and insert a piece of tin or iron, half-round, through the hole, letting it extend a few inches below the bottom of the boat, and all the water will run out without any labor. I think a ship at sea could be kept afloat if you could keep her going four miles per hour." The Mining Journal adds, we might, perhaps, remark that care should be taken to have the half-round of the iron to the stern of- the boat, as otherwise the flow of water would be inward instead of outward. The Albion, s.s., left Port Chalmers at 8 p.m., on the 19th inst., and encountered a strong gale of wind from the N.W., with a heavy head sea, ariving at the Bluff wharf at 2.30 p.m., discharged her cargo, and sailed for Melbourne" at 5 p.m. The Rangitoto, s.s., left Port Chalmers early on the morning of the 19th, and encountered a very heavy gale of westerly wind, with a heavy sea running at the Heads, at 2 a.m. on the 20th, and anchored till daylight, when she steamed up to the wharf, embarked her mails and passengers, and sailed for Melbourne at 8 a.m. Tbe Airedale, s.s., left Port Chalmers at 5 p.m. on the 19th, and the night being very dark when leaving Port Otago Heads, she accidently got aground on one of the banks, and did not leave till the following morning, encountering strong gales of westerly wind, which compelled her to anchor at the Nuggets ; left there at midnight on the 20th, arriving at the wharf at 9 a.m. on the 21st'. The ship England, Capt. Houston, sailed from the wharf in tow of the Airedale, a.s., at 2 p.m. to-day (22ud). A number of people — including Several from invercargill— assembled on the wharf to witness her departure, and when the gallant ship was lairly started on her voyage, a round of cheers wo given for ber and hei? Captain. The ship ia in tirsfc-rato trim t she wilij fcava go.
